Streamers & Leeches
Streamers and leeches are a fly tiers dream come true. These often big and bold patterns are relatively easy to tie, beautiful to look at and best of all, when fished properly, they really do catch fish. There are some classic streamer patterns that have been solid productive flies for a long time. Pictured here is a good example of that fact; the Muddler Minnow created by Dan Gapen way back in the 1950’s.
Streamer patterns can be sub-categorized into groups of patterns that include; Bucktails, Featherwings, Wooly Buggers, Leeches, Matukas and Muddlers. Within these groups you will find pattern recipes that all imitate forage fish of some type or leeches. Most pattern recipes produce big and heavy flies that often use internal weighting. Bead heads and coneheads are also prevalent ways of weighting in this category,
The hooks used in tying streamers are specialized with extra long shanks that fall in a normal range of from 2X-6X long with hook sizes running a wide range of from sizes 2-12. Ironically, natural materials still rule the recipe board here probably due to the traditional nature of many of these patterns.
