Terrestrial Patterns

Terrestrial patterns include imitations of land based trout food including; ants, bees, beetles, cicadas, crickets, grasshoppers, inchworms, katydids, spiders and wasps. With all those subjects to choose from the recipe book is quite full here with some very creative and productive patterns. Pictured here is a very successful grasshopper pattern called Dave’s Hopper created by tying master; Dave Whitlock.

Ants and grasshoppers make up the bulk of the normal anglers assortment of terrestrial patterns with an occasional beetle for good measure. Hopper recipes often call for a good deal of spun deer hair and cut wings where as ant patterns use a good deal of thread and hackle. Different tying schemes are often the case with many terrestrial patterns due to the diverse nature of the subject matter.

Foam bodied designs prevail in numerous beetle and spider patterns as well as the famous Chernobyl Ant which is basically foam, thread and rubber legs. The use of foam has opened the doors to the design of many creative and unique looking terrestrial patterns.
