Chironomid larva and pupa inhabit almost all inland waters regardless of water conditions and pollution levels. This is probably the most diverse and widely adapted Family of aquatic insects on the planet. A member of the Insect Order Diptera (two-wings), they are an important food source to trout everywhere. Stream and river species of Chironomid larva often exhibit periods of drifting where they become easy prey for trout. Dead drift this pattern to imitate this natural drifting tendency of larva and the pupa prior to emergence.
