Surfin Merkin: The Pacific Coast surf is an ecosystem un to its own inhabited with a unique group of various crabs and shrimp. The fish that prowl these waters for food key in on many of these unique creatures including the many small crab species like the Pacific Sand Crab (Mole Crab) Emerita analoga that this pattern imitates. The Merkin design was first created by Saltwater greats Del Brown and Steve Huff the Merkin style of tying a crab pattern has been proven to be one of the most successful methods ever conceived. We also use this pattern to imitate the Ghost Crab Ocypode quadrata when fishing bonefish on light colored sand. This fly just fishes well it is as simple as that.
