Takayama Sakasa Kebari - Reverse Hackle/Tan with Red Hook

Takayama is a city located in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, an area that to this day has retained a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. Takayama gained importance as a source of high quality timber and highly skilled carpenters during the feudal ages. The fly style of the Takayama region is uniquely suited for fishing both fast running mountain streams and wider slower moving lowland waters. The Japanese term Sakasa means Reverse Hackle where the concave portion of the hackle is tied facing forward creating the unique look of the pattern. Tying the collar reverse hackle style is the exact opposite of most traditional US and UK dry fly patterns. Again this style of Tenkara pattern being tied with a reverse hackle collar dates back hundreds of years to the Takayama sakasa kebari patterns of early Japanese fly fishing. The Takayama Sakasa Kebari are beautiful flies that are much more complex than traditional silk thread and hackle Tenkara flies. We offer this pattern in three basic color schemes all tied on high quality Gamakatsu C12-B hooks in sizes 12-14-16. The C-12-B has a red finish that adds considerably to the way this pattern fishes. Red hooks attract fish, and combined with the reverse hackle design of these patterns we have a truly strikingly beautiful fly that fishes equally well.
